I got my first camera phone and used it for everything except calling people.
My father noticed. He bought me a camera for my fourteenth birthday, and I didn’t do much with it — I was fourteen. It sat for four or five years before I came back to it, and when I did, something had changed. I started buying real equipment. I started learning light. I stopped taking pictures and started building them.
I was born in Jamaica and moved to Baltimore when I was nine. I’ve always been a creative person. Photography just turned out to be the outlet that fit.
Most people tell me the same thing before a shoot. I don’t know how to pose. Good. That part’s my job.
You don’t need to show up knowing what to do with your hands. I’ll direct you — where to stand, where to look, what to do with your shoulders, when to breathe. That’s included in every session, along with the concept work, the lighting, and the retouching that happens after you go home.
Because a photograph is one of the few things people actually keep. Someone’s graduation portraits will still be on their mother’s wall in twenty years. That’s not a small thing to be handed, and I don’t treat it like one.
I’d rather build you something you’re still proud of in a decade than something that looks like everyone else’s this month.
